Like many things in life, I know exactly what I want, and coats are no exception. Because I am particularly picky about coats, I spent a long time searching for the perfect coat. Lots of visits to stores, tryons, purchases, and returns. When I stumbled upon Everlane’s Cocoon Coat, tbh I didn’t have high expectation for it. Most of the coats look great on website images because all models are tall. I’d have to try them on to know if they are keepers.
What I want out of a coat is simple, or as I thought:
Based out of Raincouver, you’d think I am a fan of hoods. I am not. I find hoods often get in my way when I drive or at packed restaurants. So no hoods are needed for me.
POCKETS. I NEED POCKETS. How does anyone survive without pockets? There have to be two pockets, one on each side. I also prefer my pockets have horizontal openings that I can put in/take out my phones quickly and painlessly. Fake pockets? go away. Shallow pockets? You are kidding. Small pockets? nope.
Buttons. I much prefer buttons over zippers. It’s quicker and easier to button up than to zip up.
Oversize. The coat has to have room for layering. A slightly oversized casual coat would look great with either a thin tee underneath or with a chunky sweater. It’s also easier to put on a coat when it’s roomy.
Does anyone else list the criteria they need out of a coat? Please say yes so I don’t feel like I am the only one.
Let’s circle back to this Everlane Cocoon Coat. If you look closely, it ticks all of the above boxes. It’s slightly oversized, has horizontal-opening pockets and no hoods. Oh, and I love the camel color. Now, is this the perfect coat of my dreams? I’d say not quite but pretty close. The sleeves are a tad too long on me – I will have to get them tailored, which adds additional cost to owning the coat. The coat is made of wool and a mixture of other fabrics (6% acrylic, 8% polyester and 25% nylon). This makes the coat super warm in deep winter. A light tee as the bottom layer then a chunky, thick knit sweater on top, pairing with the coat provide enough warmth in our winter. Ah, in terms of sizing, I read the review and downsized 1 size to size 00. I feel downsizing 1 size is good enough as this coat is meant to be slightly oversized.
On a different note, while we are on the topic of winter coats, I’d like to share my thoughts on the current teddy coat trend.
I will start by saying that I love teddy coats – they are unbelievably instagrammable and have my name written all over it, cozy, oversized, buttery soft, warm and off-duty look. However, I’ve chosen to stand against the trend this season. It’s the fabric that I have an issue with. Most, if not all, of the teddy coats on the market are made with polyester. You can think of polyester the same as plastics. Yes! The same as the plastic water bottle you avoid using. Polyester and plastics are both made out of petroleum and they are also both not biodegradable. Teddy coats are a fab fashion trend that will stick around for only a couple of seasons. Once you are done with your teddy coats, where do they go? They will end up in landfills for many many decades to come. Please also think about how BIG teddy coats and how much SPACE they occupy. If you are doing everything you can to avoid plastic straws/cups, please re-think your fashion purchases. Though I am not saying I don’t buy polyester garments – I try my best to avoid buying synthetic fabric. I am saying that teddy coats will stay in our closets for a short time but a long time on the planet. I recognize that the cocoon coat featured in my post today contains a small percentage of polyester. The difference is that I plan to wear my cocoon coat for seasons to come and will not chuck it aside come spring.
That’s all I’ve got today. Thanks for reading!! As usual, if you have any questions, DM me on Instagram! I am always on the platform haha!
Everlane’s Cocoon Coat comes in six colors and of course my fav color is camel. Grey coat also looks sophisticated and casual (yea there is such thing). The olive green actually looks very luxurious. Which color do you like the most?

I love this post and this everlane coat on you! So gorgeous! Last year I bought a camel coat. And perhaps it was the quality but it very quickly picked up hundreds of little gray lint balls on it on the underside of my arms and down the front of it and it started to look not so hot. I bought a new one this year, one that I thought might be better quality and within a short period of time it became covered in lint balls. And they are not easy to get off. Like I would have to go through and pull each one off and it takes a while. Lint rollers don’t do anything. It’s like they become embedded in the fabric. I hang it up as soon as I’m home hoping to avoid it picking up more but these little lint balls are making my coat look dingy and I’ve barely had it one season. Do you ever have this issue? Do you think it’s possible it’s the material? The one I currently have I believe the outside is wool. Do you have suggestion for a better quality camel coat that will last more than one season? Do you think it’s this everlane one? Sorry that was a lot! Thank you for any advice! 🙂

Oh no! Lint balls are such a nightmare for both sweaters and coats. They are my worst enemy!! I am lucky that this Everlane coat doesn’t have this issue. I get a couple small lint balls once every few days and they come right off. I don’t need to use a lint roller or anything like that. One thing that I’ve found to be helpful is to pay attention to where you carry your purse. If you carry cross body purses, there may be more lint at where your purse sits. It’s because of the friction from the purse. The Everlane coat will last more than one season for sure! I will be wearing it for many seasons to come. Hope you find a coat that works out!! 🙂
Love how you styled the Cocoon and appreciated your thoughts on the Teddy! I’m trying to live a more sustainable life, so carrying around my refillable water bottle religiously and being mindful of my fashion purchases. Keep up the great work Irene!
